I remember when I first started research, I could not get ROOT complied on Ubuntu (this is 4-5 years ago). While support for Debian based Linux is getting better, some of my collaborators still have trouble installing stuff on Ubuntu. In a lot of experiments, we usually stuck with a fix version of software till the end of the experiment and this approach does not work too well on Debian.
