I don't suppose anyone has figured out the changes to sound in the
new 5.x kernel ?

We have many desktops with soundchis (intel HDA) but no external
speakers. With 2.6.18-128.xx and below kernels these machines
happy beeped on demand (via a small speaker on themotherboard).
Now that we have updated to kernel-2.6.18-164.6.1.el5
the beep comes through the soundcard, so we don't hear anything.

Some users have provided themselves with headphones and they
do hear a loud unpleasaant squawk of a beep. I can find lots of
suggestions (remove the pcspkr kernel module) for getting rid
of this sqawk, but my users still want to hear the beep even without
speakers on the sound card.

Any ideas ?

(Actully my woes are even worse - I have allegedly identical machines
and some not not all have lost sound through the front headphone
socket, but still have sound though the rear line out socket.)

Thanks,
