I would expect problems to be more likely if you are trying to upgrade 
two or more releases at a time.   Red Hat would certainly have tested 
5.3 to 5.4 upgrades but how much testing would they have done on 5.1 to 
5.4?   For all we know, it might not have been tested at all.  Yes, it 
would be a pain having to do three separate upgrades to get to 5.4, but 
if it was my decision that is what I would do.
