The kernel has the iwl3945 module.  However, it is disabled by
default.  You have a few options here.  Rebuild the kernel with this
module enabled.  Or try centosplus kernel (it has iwl3945 turned on).
Or download the source from intel and compile it (I know you have
tried this).

In either case, you must get the firmware from the intel site and put
it in /lib/firmware (this is required).

I do not recommend ipw3945.  It is being deprecated.  I could not get
it to work on my laptop while iwl3945 worked just fine (though this
may depend on the hardware).
