OK, I've done the yum test, with the same error that you got.
I've also rebuild fontconfig for i386 and x86_64, just as you did, and
it worked, just as yours did.
I'll make sure we get it into the S.L. 4.1 x86_64.
Thanks for pointing this out ... especially with a solution.
