Hi Forum
I Have been trying to use Scientific Linux for a while, till now, everything
fine, although I am not very used to rpm/Yum systems...
I am more of a Debian power user, although I must admit that SL ( default
install ) is less a Hog on resources than Debian lenny ( Default Install ).
In Debian either one compiles stuff ( my favourite way of installing
software ) or one uses precompiled packages ( *.deb ) solving the
depencdency issues with apt or aptitude.
I find some differences in SL/CentOS/RHEL/Fedora systems...
Trying to compile stuff, the default paths of the X11 stuff ( binaries and
libs ) is different from the rest of the linuxes... not critical... just a
matter of setting it up correctly in configure options or in
configure.inscript...
The most critical issue is using Yum to install stuff...
Many times I have tried to install existing packages, priority policies stop
me from doing it...
The only repos that I have enabled are the SL-5.3 defaults, and the EPEL
repository from fedora project...
I suppose ( should i...? ) there is a 100% binary compatibility between SL
base install and these binaries...
So... if I Try to install Octave/Octave forge, Gnumeric, as well as some
othe packages disabled by priority constraints, will it harm my system...?
BRGDS
Alex
