Check your Xorg log file in /var/log/ for any errors or warnings.
I can not find any relevant errors.

I suspect you might be running into a graphics driver/library problem.
You can make a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to force the vesa driver for testing:
Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Videocard0"
        Driver      "vesa"
EndSection
This file did not exist for me so I created it with the above lines and rebooted. The GNOME Display Manager does not come up and hangs at "Starting GNOME Display Manager" and the graphical display does not come up.
Should I try 7.1 (where is the LiveCD for that)?
Thanks!
