Have you tried installing kmod-alsa from ELrepo? I found this got sound
working on SL5 for several of my newer motherboards. I suspect the same
for SL6. I did, however leapfrog from 5 to 7. There is a bit of a
learning curve (systemd, etc), but it isn't really that horrible once
you spend a few days with it.
