actually, I was rather suggesting to change this back to the way it has worked in the past: It should return "5.8" .

I keep finding things that break due to this unusual output. That's not only homegrown scripts etc., but also tools like cfengine. Thus, tests aren't too meaningful except in the most basic environments. And noone can test exactly what will actually be released.

Testing of 5.8 beta here is stopped until I find the time to replace sl-release. Alas, I can't find the SRPM.
