Data point (even if a bit late):

 the (admittedly) ugly combination of
 SLC3 +
 kernel-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL +
 kernel-module-openafs-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-1.3.79-4.SL +
openafs-client-1.2.11-15.12.SL (requires a bit of massaging to start)

hangs on first write on UP (tried "touch .../.foo"). strace'ing the
hanging process gives something like

utime(".foo", NULL) = 0
exit_group(0) = ?

after which the process exits normally, and subsequent writes seems to
work.

Regards
Jan
