I'll share my experience on this. We have a small lab of people who don't
have much experience with Linux. They spend most of their time in gmail and
Matlab. They don't have root access to their machines, but do need access
to later versions of software and a wider range of software than what is
available in SL5.

The solution to me was to keep our servers running SL, but move the desktops
to Fedora. I've tried Fedora and Ubuntu, and its six of one, a half dozen
of the other. They have the later versions of the apps, the wider range of
supported software, the quick release cycle. But, I can use many of the
same spec files to build for SL5 or Fedora. I can use the same package
manager, and many of the same scripts to deal with installing packages for
the desktops and the servers.

In short, Fedora solves a lot of the problems that push people to Ubuntu. I
wouldn't want to use it on the servers, but I'm writing this from a Fedora
desktop.
