I will second the request for SciPy. In addition to SciPy, the python
package "numpy" (http://sourceforge.net/projects/numpy) are pre-requisites
for some astronomy-specific python modules (eg PyFITS, PyRAF;
http://www.stsci.edu/resources/software_hardware).
