I removed everything to do with gnome from my home directory but to no avail. The mouse cursor does not come back. Anyway, I think it is time to give up on SL for now.

I use KDE, so not sure where all of the gnome files reside.  Check for
dotted (.) directories in your home.  I'm guessing most of them are in
~/.config , such as ~/.config/dconf.  There may also be a ~/.gnome or
something.
