It is a Panasas Shelf (so proprietary). Of course Panasas ensures us
that it just adheres to standard Linux permissions.

I just don't understand why permissions work else where, but in this one
directory structure it is granting permissions when it shouldn't.

If I could figure out a way of seeing what is granting permissions I
might be able to come up with a solution. But I am still stumped on that.
