Using of single byte encodings as a main system locale is not good idea -- they are not officially supported by TUV -- only UTF8, look at for ex.: http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html-single/International_Language_Support_Guide/index.html#Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux_International_Language_Support_Guide-Installing_and_supporting_languages For enabling of single byte russian encodings We've made a lot of additional packages. Some words about Zip. ZIP encodings incompatibility is well known problem -- this format is not have any info about encodings of file/dir names. In Russia we have the same problem during the exchange between pre-Unicode Win. ZIP and Linux ZIP. Our solution -- slightly modified zip/unzip with added --incode=/--excode= options for packed/unpacked name encodings setting accordingly iconv conventions: http://downloads.naulinux.ru/pub/SLCE/6rolling/testing/i386/zip/zip-3.0-1.4.el6.i686.rpm http://downloads.naulinux.ru/pub/SLCE/6rolling/testing/i386/unzip/unzip-6.0-1.2.el6.i686.rpm Examples of usage: zip --excode=iso-8859-1 ISO8859.zip O\ próximo\ vôo\ à\ noite\ sobre\ o\ Atlântico\,\ põe\ freqüentemente\ o\ único\ médico. unzip --incode=iso-8859-1 ISO8859.zip As a user friendly addon we use a GUI-frontends for setting of zip/unzip encodings as a system default (system-config-archivers) or personal user settings (archivers-properties): http://downloads.naulinux.ru/pub/SLCE/6.2/i386/CyrEd/RPMS/archivers-config-0.1-2.Nau6x.noarch.rpm For using them in your environment just change "cp866" (russian win. zip-encoding) to "iso-8859-1" at system-config-archivers.py and "CP866" to "ISO8859" in frontend.glade.
