Please don't regard that problem as indicative of Scientific Linux. It was (as far as I can see) a result of the Upstream Vendor (Red Hat) releasing 32-bit packages with the 64-bit architecture. Hopefully you will not get bitten that way again. If at any time you should ever run into mixed-arch problems the rpm query line, that I showed you in my previous message, will be useful to recall.
