I have a Compaq laptop with an Intel 965GM which works fine with other linux variants, but is not recognized by SL6  (I previously had a SL5 running on this machine).  The only way I can install SL6 is to use the safe mode VESA driver.

However, I now wish to install the 965 (intel) driver but cannot get it to recognize it.  I have seen references to the 915resolution program apparently designed to deal with screen resolution issues with this display drivers, but I cannot even use that unless the intel driver is installed.

X -configure generates an xorg.conf file but that does not work either (cannot find a screen when I restart X).

I am almost certain this is not related to SL6, but can anyone point me in the right direction on this?  I have 6 other machines running great and it annoys me that I cannot get it working on this 4 year old laptop.  Could I possibly use an xorg.conf file generated for this machine by another linux system (e.g. debian) and bootstrap it that way, perhaps changing the name of the device driver if necessary?

Thanks for any ideas.  I feel like an idiot on this.
