I have seen acroread use all memory and hence lots of CPU. This was SL5 and appeared only to be when used as a firefox plugin. Disabling nppdf.so and getting firefox to use acroread as a standalone application seems to have stopped the excessive memory use. -- Dr. Andrew C.
