A test to see if you are trying to install a 64 bit machine, First mount the boot.iso image, or mount the net install CD And then do a "file" on the vmlinuz file, which is at "isolinux/vmlinuz" It will then say if it is an ELF 32-bit, or an ELF 64-bit. As an example, I have mounted a 32 bit install on /mnt/tmp1 and a 64 bit install on /mnt/tmp2 # file /mnt/tmp1/isolinux/vmlinuz /mnt/tmp2/isolinux/vmlinuz /mnt/tmp1/isolinux/vmlinuz: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1, stripped /mnt/tmp2/isolinux/vmlinuz: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, AMD x86-64, version 1, stripped I hadn't even noticed until right now that we don't say "i386" or "x86_64" in the boot message for SL5. We're fixing that right now, and SL 5.4 should say in the boot message if you are doing i386 or x86_64.
