I guess my version of "up to date" was slightly "out of date", sorry.
But I did just try this new errata kernel with the same results.

Adding "agp=off" to the kernel line in /etc/grub.conf did the trick, thanks.

And thanks to both of you for the quick responses, as well as all the work
