Maybe a misunderstanding: CERN has only ~100 IA64s, compared to several
thousands i386/x86_64. The IA64s are part of a common research project
with Intel and HP (see http://cern.ch/openlab), and while they give
really nice performance, they are currently not competitive for the HTC
applications we run on most of our machines. We are currently in
internal discussions on how we want to run these IA64 machines, i.e.
whether they should look as similar to other CERN machines (and whether
this goal is worth doing/maintaining SL(C) for IA64).
