This is how I do it. <Ctrl><Alt>-F2 (hold down Control and Alt, and then hit F2) Login on that text screen as root. Then type init 3 This put's you into the level 3 run level, which is the text based run level, which kills your X session. To get back to graphical mode, do init 5 > 2.
