What does apt-cache policy apt rpm say? These package are available for RHEL4 and clones in the same repo you try to download synaptic from (e.g. the stable atrpms repo). It looks a bit like a broken /etc/apt/preferences file. Try removing/renaming this and retry. -- Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net
