Sven,

You might not have to modify  comps.xml to only install base.  Actually 
I think the smallest you can install is base and core.

So how are you selecting base during the install?  Kickstart or 
interactive?  If interactive there is a selection way at the bottom of the 
"install groups" screen called minimal.

If you still have issues send me (not to list) the /tmp/anaconda.log that 
exists in /tmp before you reboot from the install.
