The packages in sl6x repos generally have a higher version or release
number, thus take precedence. The repositories may also have a "cost"
set in the /etc/yum.repos.d/*.repo files, which create a preference
for one repo over another, but that's tuneable. sl6x normally contains
all of sl6 and some updated packages, not necessarily in the release
or updates repositories yet, which is why it can be so useful.
