I somehow only discovered recently that in KDE, typing without a window in focus (so, typing at the desktop I guess) does the same thing: opens up a temporary command line so you can run something without an open terminal. So now I do this a lot. But, less mousing makes me happy too - there's probably a way to map an otherwise useless key (like the windows one) to save me having to mouse over the desktop to do this.
