     In bash under SL6 the terminal text turns red with the command

echo -en '\E[31m'

and turns back to black with "Reset" under "Terminal" or with

echo -en '\E[30m'

I don't know how it came to turn red unintentionally for you, but I'll bet 
this works under 7.5, too.
