Maybe. I got silly and experimented.

PS1="\[\e[1m\][\u@\h:\l \w]\$ "
and
PS1="\e[1m[\u@\h:\l \w]\$ "
and
PS1="\e[1m[\\u@\\h:\\l \\w]\$ "

all produce the same thing, which leaves the issue even more confused than when 
we started.
