Thinks for the link. I think I understand what is happening:

you - tablet - wifi 192.168.1.x - wifi access point - experiment computer - the world

So basically, all you need it to setup your computer as a wifi access spoint.

On a Mac, this is done by pushing a button somewhere in the network preferences.

On Linux, you follow any of the 100 recipes for "create my own wifi network using ubuntu"

For hardware, you do need a usb wifi dongle, or use a computer with
built-in wifi (many mobos include wifi at no extra cost).

A much more complicated option is to use a wired-ethernet usb dongle and
an asus wifi router (to achieve basically the same result).

P.S. It escapes me why you do not want to control your computer using it's own keyboard,
mouse and monitor - getting long usb and dvi cables
is simpler than mucking around with wifi networks.
