I find the graphical desktop in el7 is not an improvement over el6.

"not improvements" start from "the main login window is not showing
the machine hostname" and go down hill from there.

As solution, I am now testing the MATE desktop and the lightdm login
manager, also awaiting for KDE5, it looks like it is almost there in EPEL.

The EPEL packages for both MATE and lightdm are very up to date
and seem to work well. Coming from SL6, SL5, ... and down to RedHat ???
back in late 1990ies, I find MATE more comfortable compared to
the current el7 stock offerings. Also I can have the same version
of the same MATE desktop on Ubuntu, on el7 and on
my chromebook. (but not on SL6). (I also keep an eye on the LXDE desktop).
