Problem solved.  Although the power light (physical LED on laptop) was 
illuminated, replacing the mains adapter solved the problem.  Evidently 
not a software issue but a problem with the output (power?  voltage?) of 
the mains adapter sufficient for the LED to illuminate but not in fact 
sufficient to power the laptop.  Apologies for the extra traffic.
