Issue with X after rotating screen

Hi
I'm using SL 7.1 fully updated with yum.
I starting X with startx and then rotating the screen display 90 degrees.
On logging out from X I get a blank screen and the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive.
If I rotate the screen back to normal before logging out, X returns normally.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any clues what to look for?
