Have you tried an installation without touching the disk partitioning
at all? And why would you think that /var, /opt, and /tmp should be
separate unless you specifically request them? While those can be
optionally activated partitiions, they're not set so by *default*.

NetworkManager has gotten weird. The common approcach you're
encountering, probably becuase you installed form a DVD image or USB
stick, is that whatever network devices you have will be activaed and
configured by the user later.

Soundss like the old LVM problem, which exists for other releases.
Prying free undesired disk partition to do a clean install is easy on
a VM, just use new disk images. On real hardware, it can be more
cantankerous and involving doing something like 'dd if=/dev/zeo
of=/dev/sda' or similar command on current disks, before you reboot
the box, or using something like the 'dban' disk scrubbing tools,
which do a very thorough job but take one hell of a lot longer.

See above. Clearing the disk labels and partitions should help, and
it's much faster.

Dan's so funny that, if he worked with me, I'd be looking to fire him
for making funnies instead of learning how things work.

Sound on SL 7 is your own issue. Can't you turn it off in the BIOS, if
it's considered that dangerous?

See above. If you stop with the snarking and thinking it's cute on a
technical list, you'll get much better answers. And if you want
professional grade support to help with every problem you run into
with local practices, you might have to pay someone.

For reference, Minix, 1981.
