And for the vim users, it's Ctrl-k t h in insert mode or ctrl-l T H for the uppercase version of thorn.

To expand on Brett's gnome-terminal, it also works the same way in firefox when you want to add a Unicode character in a HTML form, for example.  I suspect ctrl-shift-u applies to all gnome apps.
