Hi Steven and JOhn,

Found a cute little utility called "cd-info":

Writing....
   Can write CD-RW                         : Yes
   Can write DVD-R                         : Yes
   Can write DVD-RAM                       : Yes
   Can write DVD-RW                        : No
   Can write DVD+RW                        : No

Not sure how comprehensive it it.
