The remote system is probably doing a reverse DNS lookup or some other lookup of the incoming connection. Make sure DNS is configured on the server side, and that there is a reverse address for your client.
Another possibility is the remote server is trying to do a ident on the incoming connection. If it's not running it should be fine, but if it's firewalled to drop instead of reject it could require a timeout.
