Hi,
I made a quick test and it seems the behaviour you are observing is
normal and the whole problem is that the warning message is misleading:
# yum -y groupinstall core 2>&1 | tail -n 2
Warning: Group core does not have any packages.
No packages in any requested group available to install or update
# rpm -e xorg-x11-drv-ati-firmware
# yum -y groupinstall core 2>&1 | tail -n 2
Complete!
# yum -y groupinstall core 2>&1 | tail -n 2
Warning: Group core does not have any packages.
No packages in any requested group available to install or update
