You have quite a magic zoo of devices.

This is what I use.

a) for machines that do not need any storage at all (just the OS) - USB2/USB3 flash (16GB is okey)

since "yum install" is super slow with "/" on USB flash, use option

b) for machines with fast desktop performance - SATA SSD 30GB or 60GB (any BIOS can boot from SATA SSD)

if storage is needed, add

c) dual 3TB SATA disks, in mirrored (mdadm RAID1) configuration

Note 1: if you do not want to lose everything when your SSD bricks itself, mirror (mdadm RAID1) the SSD
disks as well. (There is some mumbling about RAID1 being unfriendly to SSD flash media,
but it seems to work just fine here - 2 machines built like that).

Note 2: option (a) is not so good these days - cost of fast USB flash drives
is about the same as cost of low capacity SSDs ($30/16GB USB flash vs $50/30GB SATA SSD) -
"yum install" is instantaneous on SATA SSD and every USB3 flash drive I tried has
died (they overheat). Only one model of USB2 flash drive is known to last when
used for Linux "/".

As for exotic stuff, like 15k RPM disks and PCIe SSD, I guess some people feel rich.
