I can really identify with the xkcd graphic.  X11 graphics on Linux has really come a long way. It was a real struggle back in the early 90's.

Florian's response is spot on.  Having a xorg.conf actually messes things up.  Dont know why.  But when you get rid of it, some automagical happens.
