as it turned out, problems was deeper than originally thought.

for some strange, not to be known, reason, the system was FUBB.


among the strangeness of not being able to change passwords at any
init level, with drives set 'rw', both the 'user' and 'root' were set
to '0'.

in a 'one more time' effort to change passwords, i booted to level 5,
opened gnome desktop as 'root' and search system gui features. among
them, i found a user manager.

therein, i was able to set passwords for 'root' and 'user' and properly
assign 'user' to a 501.

after logging out and back in as 'root' in kde, i preceded to clean up
directories that had wrong ownership.

now, all is back to what appears normal.


my thanks and appreciation to those who responded.


there is now a new problem of getting 'liveusb-creator' to work.
