Scientific Linux 6.4 Beta 2 i386/x86_64 Mar 8, 2013

These are notes of the "Alpha/Beta" releases for Scientific Linux 6.4 .

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

THIS IS NOT FOR PRODUCTION.

This is for testing. Please report back any issues to
   [log in to unmask] .

There should be no expectation that a "yum" upgrade to SL 6.4 will work.
A new install is the recommended method to move from
"sl6rolling"(this alpha/beta release) and the released "SL 6.4".

Items marked with * are changes from the last release

CHANGES WE MADE SINCE PREVIOUS RELEASE
ITEMS MARKED with a ** are changes since last ALPHA/BETA
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

*sl-release-6.4-rolling
- Updated to point at rolling

*yum-conf-sl6x
- Now installed by default

**OpenAFS
- OpenAFS has been updated to version 1.6.2 from openafs.org

- The way in which OpenAFS is packaged has changed between SL6.3 and
SL6.4. This change should not alter the expected functionality.

The kmod-openafs package now depends on a kmod-openafs-<ver> package.
These '<ver>' packages are targeted at more specific kernel versions.
For example, kmod-openafs-279 is for kernels in the 2.6.32-279 series
and kmod-openafs-358 is targeted at kernels in the 2.6.32-358 series.
The openafs-module-tools package will perform the necessary module
     deployment.

Kernel version specific packages will not be placed in repos where
the specified version is not present.

Any 32-bit SL6 system should be aware of possible problems with the
afs cache when switching from kernels prior to kernel-2.6.32-279.el6.
Purging your OpenAFS cache seems to resolve this issue.

We expect this new packaging structure will help avoid similar issues
     in the future.

**yum-conf-sl-other
- Added 'sl-addons' repo
- This repo may not be accessable during the Alpha/Beta cycle

**revisor
- All revisor packages are now in 'sl-addons'

**livecd-tools
- All livecd-tools packages are now in 'sl-addons'

**liveusb-tools
- All liveusb-tools packages are now in 'sl-addons'

MAJOR CHANGES TUV MADE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
*matahari
- Discontinued by upstream

*xorg ABI change
- See POSSIBLE UPGRADE PROBLEMS for more info

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
POSSIBLE UPGRADE PROBLEMS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

*xorg ABI change
- With SL6.4 there is a change in the X.org ABI for the video drivers.
This change will require compatible drivers. Anyone using the drivers
shipped with SL should have no problems. Anyone using drivers from
an external source - such as nVidia, ATI, or ELRepo should ensure
a compatible driver is loaded. Please ensure you are on the most
recent compatible driver before updating the system.
