This may well be because I'm running the ATI fglrx binary driver. The 
card is an ATI HD6800 series card and it runs the fan flat out under the 
OSS drivers. As such, I don't really have a choice :)

It also seems to handle the 3 x 24" screens at 1920x1080 better with the 
ATI binary driver...
