RANDR is a standard extension; something unusual must be going on here.

Unless
 	xdpyinfo | grep RANDR
prints something you can rule sane out for that error.

Very much agreed.

Assuming you are running xsane and the X display on the same machine
which grpahics card and graphics driver are you using ?
