You need to look at all the non-default repositories you have turned
on. EPEL does not necessarily play well with RPMforge, which do not
necessarily play well with atrpms, etc., etc., etc. This is why the
upstram vendor does not even *provide* hooks to those repositories,
but Scientific Linux elects to provide the hooks if you want them.

Running "yum list" will give you some hints of which components are
from which repository. and "yum repolist" will give you some sense of
which repositories you have active. start from that information, and
be aware that vlc has a *giant caboose load* of dependencies, and you
shouldn't try to run it on a development machine that has critical
EPEL build components on.
