yes, today it was the issue for me too. SL61 after upgrade "yum upgrade; 
reboot"
did not appeared on the screen of my VM.

I did

1. Ctrl/Alt/F1 and get the text screen

2. yum --releasever=6.2 update

3. reboot the VM

and vu a la the system started as expected (with X-server).
