You are supposed to remove "rhgb" and "quiet" from the kernel command line in grub. Then your problem goes away.

(Ubuntu & co are one step in front of everybody on this - their boot screen is completely blank
from GRUB to X11 login. If the same people built cars, there would be no speedometer,
no fuel guage and no radio volume turn-knob).
