The gnome document viewer, evince, is able to preview dvi files.  Double-clicking on a dvi icon brings up the viewer and it runs the necessary TeX programs to generate the fonts it needs.

xdvipdfmx does not have xdvi either; it's XeTeX-aware dvi to pdf converter.

So, it has been superseded.
