Addendum - if I rename the broken main.cld to main.cld and try to run the
daemon it fails to run:
Starting Clam AntiVirus Daemon: LibClamAV Error: cli_cvdverify: Can't read CVD 
header
LibClamAV Error: Can't load /var/clamav/main.cld: Broken or not a CVD file
ERROR: Broken or not a CVD file
                                                            [FAILED]
rerunning freshclam gives:
