It "seems" (note "weasel" word) like things go 20 times faster on
Fedora.  I haven't actually measured it.

Typically what I am trying to copy is contents of a data
DVD I am creating for a customer from my hard drive -- about
3 GB.  From SL it takes about four hours to copy.  From
Fedora, it takes about 15 minutes.

It acts as if SL is on USB 1 and Fedora in on USB 2.
