Try booting with 'init=/bin/sh' in the kernel command line.  This approach 
might force you to manually mount the root filesystem containing /etc ... and 
then you can change the root password, unmount and reboot.  Then you can enter 
single user with a known password.  If you save the root password stored in 
/etc/shadow before you change the password, you can also restore the old root 
password if that's needed afterwards.
